Best known perhaps for its spectacular Diego Rivera mural, the Detroit Institute of Arts is a sprawling hall of arts with an excellent showing of works by the 19th century American landscape artists and works of the Italian Renaissance.

    Shirin Neshat 5/21
     

    Shirin Neshat, an Iranian American artist living in New York City, is widely acclaimed for her extraordinary video installations and art photography. This mid-career retrospective includes eight video installations and two series of art photography. Neshat confronts the complexities of identity, gender and power to express her own vision that embraces the depth of Islamic tradition and Western concepts of individuality and liberty.

  • Ellsworth Kelly: Prints

    Ellsworth Kelly’s famous prints of geometric shapes, along with prints of flowers and  plants, will be on view at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The exhibition is free with museum admission.

  • Drawing in the Galleries for Adults

    Artist/instructors help participants create pencil drawings to take home. No experience necessary. All supplies provided.

  • Detroit City Chess Club
    Detroit City Chess Club 5/24 4:00PM
     

    The club’s mission is to teach area students the game and life lessons. Members have won state, regional and national competitions. There will be no teaching between 6 and 8 p.m., but visitors can play chess.
