Robert Cray and Mavis Staple

Sharing the mainstage at the Ann Arbor film festival this week are two powerhouses of R&B and Blues. If you didn’t know it, legendary blues guitarist Robert Cray is a five-time Grammy Award winner and the leader of his own band, the Robert Cray Band. Hailing from Columbus, Georgia, he’s been making music since the 80’s and in 2011, Cray was inducted to the Blues Hall of Fame by The Blues Foundation. Mavis Staple has seen a lot of important American History, being a civil rights activist during her career as a member of The Staple Sisters and beyond. She’s been a voice in black music and politics for decades (and she’s partly responsible for the earworm “I’ll take you there”). It’s impossible to sum up the scope of the work of both artists in a paragraph, but they’re undeniably part of American music history and it would be a mistake to pass up this performance.
