As the states only literary imprint devoted solely to the publication of Michigan-based authors, the MIMWS is proving that lit in the mitt is not only alive, but thriving. Celebrate this seasons amazing crop of new books and authors with Strings and Steel: A Spring Celebration of the Made in Michigan Writers Series at MOCAD on Wednesday, May 21, 2014. As with last years MIMWS Books & Beer Backyard Bash, you can expect the MIMWS to do something unexpected. In addition to readings, the presentation will feature a steel drummer, video, music, and even PUPPETS. This fusion of art, media and literature will produce an entertaining evening that attendees will remember long after the party ends. Check out our showcase of great talent for the evening: Diane DeCilliss poetry has been nominated for two Pushcart Prizes and Best American Poetry. Her debut poetry collection, Strings Attached, considers all the ways that strings bind us in relationships and explores their constant tightening and loosening. Lolita Hernandez is the 2012 Kresge Literary Arts fellow and author of Making Callaloo in Detroit. In this new short story collection, she weaves her memories of food, language, music, and family into a most unique tapestry. Andy Mozina won the Great Lakes College Association New Writers Award and has received numerous special citations for his fiction. Each story in his latest collection, Quality Snacks, shares striking insight and a cast of compelling, well-conceived characters. Lisa Lenzos first short story collection was chosen by Ann Beattie for the 1997 John Simmons Short Fiction Award. Her new collection, Strange Love, is made up of nine stories that alternate between mother and daughter; and while each tale stands alone, together they make up a larger whole. Conrad Hilberry, winner of the Iowa Poets Prize, had a long career teaching literature and creative writing at Kalamazoo College. Until the Full Moon Has Its Say is the acclaimed authors latest collection of poems. Heres all you have to bring: (1) your hips, for swinging to live, pre-show music by Depression-era swing band The Jalopy Brothers, (2) your face, for munching complimentary light appetizers, (3) your piggy bank, for purchasing one of the many MIMWS and regional titles on sale that evening. So tell your friends, tell your mom, tell that cute barista, because this is one literary event that no ones going to want to miss! In addition to the Made in Michigan event on the 21st, WSU Press has partnered with several other Detroit social groups to create an entire month of literature-themed programming called Lit in the Mitt Month. Detroit-based, book-loving organizations like Nerd Nite 313, Literary Detroit, Source Booksellers, the Book Club of Detroit, Signal-Return, the Scarab Club, and the Detroit Drunken Historical Society will be holding events throughout the month celebrating creative writing, each in their own unique way. We hope you can attend all of them. Young or old, book lover or poet, theres no better way to support Lit in the Mitt! For more info, and a complete schedule of events, visit litinthemitt.org.
