Jessica Hernandez made all the right DIY moves, including creating her own venue in a space above her family’s bakery. And in the days when big labels — like big Detroit auto companies — ain’t what they used to be, that’s the way most enterprising artists forge careers. Then out of the blue, the esteemed Blue Note label came calling.
