He’s the reigning trombonist in the generation of players who came up under the likes of Detroiters Kenn Cox, Teddy Harris, Harold McKinney, Marcus Belgrave et al. Vincent Chandler performed with stars from Joe Henderson to Christian McBride, recorded with James Carter and Roy Hargrove and with such local projects as the much-missed Urban Transport, which he co-led with saxophonist Dean Moore. And he can draw on connections from the local jazz-education complex (he’s a University of Michigan master’s exponent himself). No word on his lineup, but no fears that it’ll be less than top-notch for two sets of his original compositions. Opera singer Kimwana Doner (subject of an MT cover story some years back) is the special guest vocalist. At the DIA, 5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit; 313-833-7900; sets at 7 and 8:30 p.m., free with DIA admission as part of the special Friday Night Live! offerings (and admission is waived for city of Detroit residents with ID on Fridays, if you didn’t know).
