Hordes of activists and independent media people will converge in and around Wayne State University’s McGregor Memorial Conference Center for four days for this year’s Allied Media Conference. It’s a chance for those engaged in activism, independent media (from zines to blogs) and technology to put their heads together on making the world a better, fairer and freer place. In addition to networking, tabling, special sessions and daily ceremonies, there will be plenty of opportunities for these power-to-the-people folks to party, with events at the Majestic Theatre Complex, the Furniture Factory and a Saturday-night music showcase at the Museum of Contemporary Art (4454 Woodward Ave.; 313-832-6622; free for attendees, $6 suggested donation for non-AMC attendees) featuring Detroit-born, Brooklyn-based Waajeed, as well as a dance-heavy lineup including electropop from ex-Le Tigre member JD Samson’s project MEN, house from Fischerspooner tour DJ Lauren Flax, hip hop from the Black Opera, and a set from “hip-hop violinist” Emily Wells.
