One of music’s greatest soul singers, Al Green set the standard for smooth soul in the early ’70s with a string of stylish and seductive singles that now epitomize his classic sound. Known early on for incorporating elements of gospel into his music, Green joined the ministry in the mid-’70s and spent much of the ’80s and ’90s focusing primarily on religious music. In recent years, he’s returned to recording secular music with superb results that have only solidified his legendary status. Green, along with his 13-piece band, singers and dancers, perform as part of the Ann Arbor Summer Festival’s opening weekend, at 8 p.m. at Hill Auditorium, 825 N. University Ave., Ann Arbor; 734-764-2538; annarborsummerfestival.org; $35-$75.
