Cults hit the scene in 2010, posting a three-track EP to Bandcamp that set all the cool kids to panting for more. The New York-based duo craft dreamy, ‘60s-inspired pop, but unlike other retro acts of the same ilk, Cults focuses less on lo-fi fuzziness and more on polished melodies and harmonies. Vocalist Madeline Follin’s earnest delivery and pouty, twee-alto are perfectly suited to the breezy tunes and puppy-love lyrics. The occasional use of samples of cult leaders speaking to their members effectively adds an eerie tinge to the otherwise lighthearted mood. Cults released their self-titled debut last year (only adding to the hype); they perform in support of it at 8 p.m. at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale; 248-544-3030; $15 advance; with Spectrals and Mrs. Magician.
